"It's so cute!" is a comment we hear a lot about
the Volkswagen Cabrio. Indeed, until the
Cabrio was the lone compact in VW's stable in the 90s
to carry on the cutie tradition of the original Beetle and
Karmann Ghia, until, of course, the New Beetle arrived
in the late 1998.
But one should not dismiss the Cabrio as merely a
"chick car", as many people do. Sure, women love the
styling of the Cabrio. But with its integrated roll bar it
is also safer than most convertibles, and its open
layout makes it much more practical than vehicles of
this size. Two (non-obese) people, for example,
can sit in the rear with the top up or down in relative
comfort. Yet the Cabrio can park just about anywhere
an old MG can.
Workmanship, handling, and styling are all of the
German tradition. Gas mileage
(31 mpg on the highway and
24 mpg in the city) is of the
Volkwagen way. It is as easy on one's wallet as
it is on one's eyes.
